Following the widespread international success of his three-part Floating EP back in August, hotly-tipped Dutch producer Crouwel now looks to continue his prolific run of form on Reflektor Records, as he returns to the esteemed Amsterdam-based imprint for his sophomore studio outing. Teaming up this time with modular synth maestro and fellow Dutchman, Colin Benders, the newly acquainted artists now announce their eagerly anticipated debut collaboration as they unveil the breath-taking new single, Far Away.

A hypnotic, down-tempo house cut tempered by gentle piano refrains, warped synthesisers, warming basslines and an infectious vocal hook, Far Away is a remix produced by Crouwel, using stems taken from Colin’s quarantine lockdown sessions, which he’s been sharing with his Modular Mayhem community on Discord over the past few months.

Speaking about the upcoming release, Crouwel commented:

“The story of ‘Far Away’ is special and it’s a creation that would not have happened without Corona. During the Dutch lockdown, Colin did some amazing quarantine modular jams from his home, archiving each of the streams so that anybody who was part of his Discord community could download them. Using some of the parts from the stream as a basis, I created the first demo for the track, then later we had some virtual contact and finished it. This way of working and the situation we’re in was also of great influence to the title and the lyrics of ‘Far Away’. I’m really happy with how the track turned out and glad to have been working with Colin – it gives some positivity around such a strange and often negative time in the world in general and the cultural industry.”

For Benders, the release comes off the back of a milestone month for him as a solo artist – a month which saw the release of his three-part Floaty Things EP on newly launched label Hiss & Hertz Records, and one which he marked with an incredible 4000 vinyl giveaway to tremendous international uptake.

HOW DATA HELPED UMEK MAKE ONE OF THE BIGGEST TECHNO COMEBACKS IN YEARS

The legendary DJ and producer reveals his label’s rise to success with the help of data analytics

UMEK (1).jpg

Since 2018, UMEK has produced eight #1 tracks and 46 tracks that charted among Beatport’s Top 100. His label, 1605, launched 13 years ago, is also among the Top 10 labels on Beatport, signing rising talent such as Cosmic Boys, Space 92, and Teenage Mutants.

It’s one of the biggest comebacks any techno artist and label have made in recent years. How did they do it? By combining their 30-year industry experience and talent with data science – something that most of the music industry still sleeps on.

“Let’s get one thing straight: you can’t get to no. 1 without talent and hard work. Data will never replace that,” explains UMEK, then laughs: “But it’s such a great secret weapon to have. My guys at Viberate made me a real stats geek, so while some people are browsing Facebook each day, I’m out there looking at charts and comparing trends. It’s awesome!”

Below is a video that shows how UMEK’s performance started rising once a data-driven approach was introduced.

1605’s decision-making process is powered by Viberate, a research and music analytics platform co-founded by UMEK. Their Viberate analytics offer simple yet much-needed metrics for artists and labels: performance on social media and music streaming channels, insights into audiences and genre trends, detailed Beatport analytics, and even how artists are connected with one another.

UMEK concludes: “I believe that having the right information is one of the most important factors for making it in the industry. And I’d love to help make that accessible to as many other artists as possible. We went as far as organizing free webinars to teach everyone how they can use the data themselves.”

You can join the next webinar on Tuesday, 22 December 2020, when UMEK and his manager Vasja Veber will demonstrate how to use Beatport analytics to up your Beatport game. More details here.

THICK GLASSES - TOUR DE PISTE (DJ UNPIER & KENAN BELZNER REMIX) - HELL FOR BREAKFAST

A FIRST FOR HELL FOR BREAKFAST LABEL!

Stream : Thick Glasses - Tour de piste (DJ UNPIER & Kenan Belzner remix)

At Hell for Breakfast, we like to push boundaries and try new things that we believe could bring a breath of fresh air to the scene, while still remaining true to the core values. That is what brought us to collaborate with the DJ/producers DJ UNPIER and Kenan Belzner for a dubstep remix of the song "Tour de piste" by Thick Glasses. The mix of rock and dubstep has been more becoming more popular over the past few years with veterans of the scene like PhaseOne collaborating with metal bands like Thy Art Is Murder and Northlane, Steve Aoki collaborating with Blink-182, Sullivan King with Avenged Sevenfold, KORN with Skrillex, Downlink and Noisia, basically, people want to hear it and DJ UNPIER and Kenan Belzner knocked it out of the park with the high energy, easy to dance to, remix.

For DJ UNPIER, his mission is to put French forward in his original mixes. When we first met, he told me "Dubstep is massive in Montréal, yet somehow none of it is in French." so when he heard the new Thick Glasses EP back in August, he had the idea to apply that mix, but with a French spin on it.

In the punk scene since his adolescence, DJ UNPIER couldn't resist reimagining Thick Glasses' song "Tour de piste" with a dubstep twist. With all the hardships as of late, adding a new level of aggressivity to the song provides the listener with an ultimate anthem to vent and let off steam. The melody from "Tour de piste", rough and aggressive vocals and the energy in the original track caught DJ UNPIER's attention and made him want to pay tribute to it by proposing a musical mix between Pennywise and SVDDEN DEATH.
