The UK-bred, Vancouver-based producer also announces his international Funk The System tour, taking him to ten cities across U.S., Canada, and the UK, with more to be announced
“‘Trippy Road’ is the first single from my brand new album Funk The System! It's been almost three years to the day since I first wrote the initial sketch for ‘Trippy Road’, and while I usually work fast, I’m glad I gave this one the time and attention it deserved. I knew it had serious potential — and I’m so happy with how it turned out. zoska is one of the producers I admire most right now — her music is colourful, fun, and funky, just how I like it. Working with ProbCause was incredible too; he’s behind some of the tracks I hold dearest, and he elevated this one to a whole new level. Add to that my dopest artwork yet from CatDirty, and this might just be the release I’m proudest of to date. I can’t wait for the world to hear it!” - Father Funk
UK-bred, Vancouver-based bass disruptor Father Funk is ready to enter a new chapter with his new track, “Trippy Road” - the lead single from his forthcoming album, Funk The System, due out Friday, November 14. A collaboration with rapper ProbCause - who’s known for standout features for artists such as GRiZ, Levity, Big Gigantic, Daily Bread, and more - and fellow funky bass producer zoska, “Trippy Road” is a dubstep banger that embodies Father Funk’s mission to reinvent funk for the bass generation.
“Trippy Road” represents a culmination of Father Funk’s career thus far. As a pink-haired, bass music producer with roots as a guitarist, bassist, and trombonist for various punk and ska bands - and now six years sober - Father Funk has been a bit of an outcast from the electronic music industry machine. Starting as a prominent figure in the Ghetto Funk scene, Father Funk has been able to pave his own path, endearing himself to fans and fellow musicians alike through his genre-defying bass style - leading to Beatport-charting singles (his track “Be Funky” was #1 on the Glitch Hop Chart); collaborations with artists such as Dirt Monkey, Boogie T, SubDocta, and SoDown; releases on labels such as Wakaan, Drama Club, Jadu Dala, Space Pizza Records, and Ghetto Funk; performances at international festivals such as Shambhala (which he’s played seven times), Glastonbury, Boomtown, Shindig, Rainbow Serpment, and Mushroom Valley; and a tour support spot alongside The Floozies.
On “Trippy Road,” listeners can hear how Father Funk’s outsider mentality has informed his creative approach, breaking the conventional rules of dubstep while still delivering the cathartic headbanging bombast that fans of the genre have come to expect. Blending together live instrumentation (such as guitar, bass, brass, organ and clavinet) and genres such as trap, funk, hip-hop, and soul, “Trippy Road” reflects Father Funk’s distinct songwriting skill set - a sonic mashup that takes listeners on a fully realized journey, while injecting the bass music scene with a newfound sense of heart and spirit. As a result, “Trippy Road” showcases its creator’s focus on genuine songcraft, forgoing the conventional build-drop-build-drop formula.
The story of “Trippy Road” spans two years of collaboration and persistence. In 2023, Father Funk and zoska first discussed working together and developed an early sketch of “Trippy Road,” which quickly became a crowd favorite in live sets but still felt incomplete. After months of back-and-forth, the breakthrough came in late 2024 with the addition of vocals from ProbCause, who rounded out the song with his boundless swagger.
Kicking off with bluesy, sun-kissed guitar licks, “Trippy Road” quickly drops into ProbCause’s buttery flow over a trunk-rattling trap beat. The song then builds into its central section - a raucous dubstep soundscape replete with intricately designed wubby bass and hard-hitting drums. Vibrant and blazingly fun, “Trippy Road” takes listeners on a ride through Father Funk’s distinct inner-creativity.
As the lead single from his upcoming album Funk The System, “Trippy Road” also serves as a sharp encapsulation of the LP’s ethos: a project that refuses to abide by the conventional wisdom of bass music. Playing by his own rules, Father Funk is building a new paradigm for the genre - one that subverts the irony and cynicism that has dominated the scene for years, and instead emphasizes sincerity and joy. The title also speaks to Father Funk’s overall guiding philosophy: to release independently, to fight against the music industry, and to overcome personal struggle to make life-affirming music for others. As a result, these new tracks feature an eclectic and dynamic spirit, seeking to surprise as much as they are trying to entertain, and appeal to the headphone listeners as much as the rail-riders.
Fans will be able to hear “Trippy Road” and other Funk The System tracks on Father Funk’s upcoming international Funk The System Tour - a ten-date run that’ll see the producer perform in cities such as Vancouver, Bristol, Reno, Spokane, and Chico. More shows will be announced at a later date.
