Left-field electronica from two of LA’s most notable underground talents
LA’s own Maude Vôs exists within the union of mechanical and musical. The cohesion of technical and the spiritual. To this psychotropic soundscape, she invites her listeners through her experimental live sets or hardware heavy productions, the latest of which is her three track EP, The Umbra.
The Umbra depicts Vôs’s entire story of quarantine. From the darkest lows to the euphoric highs, she harnessed the experience and channeled it into intentional arrangements and driving rhythms. All who persevered through this world reckoning can find familiarity in these offerings.
“I'm grateful to lift the veil by releasing The Umbra as life begins again. An Umbra is a shadow or darkness and at times I think many of us waxed in and out of those moments, missing loved ones, dancefloors and our community. True to my art, this EP can be played at home and at the party,” Vôs says.
The Umbra also serves as the debut release on Delusional Records, Vôs’s new imprint with fellow leftfield intellectual, Marie Nyx.
Originally connecting at bāzəl—Nyx’s monthly curatorial featuring alluring Los Angeles talent—the two continued their relationship through other opportunities such as co-production sessions and DJ sets on Desert Hearts TV.
Quickly, they discovered a reciprocal taste for the mysterious sounds of electronic music with a shared affinity for creating dreamy landscapes and transporting listeners to an unexplored aural space.
Vôs and Nyx produce, perform, and otherwise promulgate music contradicted by reality or rational argument. Music that is delusional, and the dancefloor is where delusions conjoin with humanity. Delusional Records is giving that experience a second life.
This imprint is a hub for all delusional individuals to thrive together, as a community; Whether you’re an artist pushing sonic boundaries into new sensory territory or a listener seeking something that exists outside what’s expected in the club or warehouse in the club or warehouse.
“I use the term Lebenskünstler when I describe myself and the closest translation is a ‘life artist.’ It is an embodiment of philosophy, practice and aesthetic. Everything for me runs deeper, from how you live your life, to where you draw your inspiration to create. To me it's all aligned,” says Vôs.
Nyx continues by saying, “Who you sign is a representation of your label, it is important to sign people who align with your core values.”
The core values of Delusional are experimentation, visibility and inclusivity. With their joint venture, Vôs and Nyx are reviving the roots of dance music culture; when there were no rules, just honest expression. That concept may have been considered delusional for a time, but no longer. It is, once again, reality.
ABOUT THE UMBRA
Throughout quarantine, Maude Vȏs embraced uncertainty, channeling the darkness of the era into the menacing three-track EP, The Umbra, the debut release on her new imprint, Delusional Records.
This triad of electronic nocturnes depicts the entire story of the LA-based producer’s journey through the world’s recent reckoning. Vȏs spent this turbulent time doing what she always does, honing her craft and adding new hardware to her production arsenal. Thus bringing about intentional arrangements, captivating soundscapes and driving rhythms to demonstrate her complex emotional journey.
The ensemble begins with “Ame Damnee.” With the first beat serving as a minimalist canvas, obscure elements consistently expand the original idea into progressive territory. Suddenly, a deep bass evolves, captivating the soul of the listener followed by a haunting melodic synth lead. Before long, the drums unite the composition, driving it to the pinnacle of resolution.
“Lilith” embodies a conquest of perseverance and the embodiment of one's truest self. Where the previous track relied on an unfolding journey, this hitter is absent of all restraint. A hard techno kick drives the music forward, breaking through the fog of ambient elements as if to say “I embrace standing alone in the chaos.”
Finally, the tension is released into the progressive melodies of “Luere.” The dark and dissonant aesthetic remains within the foundation, but now the knots are untied. The road ahead is clear as we resurface to our personal solace. All the impending trials will be faced with confidence and courage.
