THE INTERVIEW

CR: Hello Martin, Glad to have you on Canadianravers how are you doing and where are you talking to us from?

LF: Hello, and thank you for having me, Canadianravers! I'm doing well, thank you. I'm currently speaking to you from Muelheim an der Ruhr, Germany. It's a pleasure to be here.

CR: What inspired your latest track 'Veins' and how does it reflect your personal growth as an artist?

LF: Veins is a cooperation with the amazing Los Angeles singer-songwriter B Martin. I've always liked Brendan's singing skills. Veins is a song that you don't get to do every day and I'm particularly proud to have done the song with Brendan. It's a song for eternity. The inspiration behind 'Veins' stems from a deeply personal place. I drew upon experiences of introspection and self-discovery, exploring the intricate emotions that flow through us like veins. The song captures a journey of personal growth, both musically and emotionally. As an artist, I've evolved in my ability to convey raw emotion through my music, and 'Veins' reflects that growth. It's a culmination of my artistic exploration and a reflection of my ongoing journey as a musician.

CR: If you could collaborate with any non-EDM artist, who would it be and why?

LF: If I could collaborate with any non-EDM artist, it would undoubtedly be Taylor Swift. Her songwriting prowess and ability to connect with audiences on a deeply emotional level are unparalleled. Collaborating with Taylor would be a dream come true, as her storytelling abilities would complement my production style beautifully. Together, we could create music that merges the infectious energy of EDM with Taylor's heartfelt lyrics and melodies, resulting in tracks that resonate with listeners on a profound level.

CR: What is the most unexpected source of inspiration you've drawn from outside the music industry?

LF: As a musician, you might find unexpected inspiration in everyday sounds and rhythms around you. Whether it's the rhythmic pattern of raindrops hitting a window, the melodic chirping of birds in the morning, or the ambient noise of a bustling city street, these seemingly ordinary sounds can spark creative ideas and influence your music in surprising ways. Additionally, personal experiences, emotions, and interactions with people from different walks of life can also serve as rich sources of inspiration, shaping the narrative and mood of your compositions in unique ways.

CR: How do you balance staying true to your signature sound while still evolving and experimenting creatively?

LF: Balancing staying true to my signature sound while evolving and experimenting creatively is a delicate dance that I constantly engage in. I believe it's essential to honor the core elements that define my music while also allowing myself the freedom to explore new sonic territories and push boundaries. This balance is achieved through a combination of introspection, experimentation, and collaboration. I stay connected to my roots by infusing my music with the elements that resonate deeply with me, whether it's a distinctive melodic motif or a particular rhythmic groove. At the same time, I'm always open to incorporating fresh ideas and embracing new techniques to keep my sound dynamic and innovative. Collaborating with other artists also provides valuable perspectives and helps me break out of my comfort zone, inspiring me to evolve creatively while maintaining the essence of what makes my music uniquely mine.

CR: How do you engage with your audience during a live set, and what do you believe sets a great DJ performance apart from a good one?

LF: Engaging with my audience during a live set is paramount to me. I strive to create an immersive experience where listeners are not just passive spectators, but active participants in the journey of the music. I achieve this by reading the energy of the crowd, responding to their reactions, and curating a dynamic set that resonates with them on a visceral level. Whether it's through seamless transitions, unexpected track selections, or interactive moments, I aim to forge a deep connection with my audience, fostering a sense of unity and euphoria on the dance floor.

In my view, what sets a great DJ performance apart from a good one is the ability to craft a narrative that transcends mere song selection. It's about curating a sonic journey that takes the audience on an emotional rollercoaster, building tension and release, and ultimately leaving them with a lasting impression. A great DJ knows how to balance technical skill with intuition, seamlessly blending tracks to create a cohesive and unforgettable experience that lingers in the minds and hearts of the audience long after the music stops.

CR: If you were not a producer/DJ what would have been your career choice?

LF: If I hadn't pursued a career as a producer and DJ, I often pondered what my path might have been. Growing up, I had a deep passion for football and aspired to become a professional player. The thrill of competition, the camaraderie with teammates, and the sheer joy of playing the game fueled my dreams on the field. Had circumstances led me down a different road, I could easily envision myself dedicating my life to the sport, whether as a player, coach, or involved in the management side of football. While music ultimately became my calling, I'll always cherish the memories and lessons learned from my time on the pitch, and perhaps in an alternate reality, I'm still chasing goals on the football field.

CR: DJs/ Producers travel with multiples of that one item, what is that item for you?

LF: For me, the essential item I always travel with multiples of is my USB stock loaded with the songs I play. These tiny devices hold not just my music, but also the energy and emotion that I channel into my performances. Having backups of my USBs gives me peace of mind, knowing that I'm prepared for any unexpected technical glitches or last-minute changes.

CR: What do you like to do during your down time other than producing music?

LF: During my downtime, aside from producing music, I enjoy engaging in a variety of activities that help me recharge and find inspiration. One of my favorite pastimes is fishing. There's something incredibly calming and meditative about being out on the water, surrounded by nature, and patiently waiting for that elusive bite. It allows me to clear my mind, reconnect with the natural world, and often sparks creative ideas that find their way into my music.

I'm also an avid reader, and you can often find me immersed in a good book. Whether it's fiction, non-fiction, or biographies, I love exploring different worlds and perspectives through literature. Reading not only expands my knowledge but also stimulates my imagination, influencing my artistic vision in unexpected ways.

Lastly, I cherish spending time with friends. Whether it's grabbing a coffee, going for a hike, or simply hanging out and sharing stories, the camaraderie and laughter we share rejuvenate my spirit and remind me of the importance of human connection amidst the solitary nature of music production. These moments of leisure and connection outside of the studio enrich my life and ultimately enhance my creativity when I return to making music.

CR: Are there any upcoming projects or collaborations you are particularly excited about and would like to share with our readers?

LF: Yes, but first my new song “Stars In The Sky” will be released on Wednesday April 17th, which I'm really looking forward to. After that, new releases continue in quick succession.

I'm beyond excited to share some upcoming projects and collaborations with our readers! Then up, on April 26th, I'll be dropping a track titled 'Pretty Little Things,' a collaboration with the incredible talents of Kovan and Poylux. It's been an incredible journey working with them, and I can't wait for everyone to hear the result of our collaboration.

Following that, mark your calendars for May 10th because I'll be releasing another collaboration titled 'You & I,' this time with the amazing artists Crüpo and Nghtime!. Working with them has been an absolute blast, and I believe this track will be something truly special.

But that's not all! There are more collaborations in the works, but unfortunately, I can't reveal any details just yet. All I can say is that there's a lot of exciting music on the horizon, so stay tuned for updates and be sure to follow along for all the latest news!

Döner Kebap is my favoutite Fast Food. The combination of juicy meat, fresh vegetables, and flavorful sauces wrapped in warm bread makes it a delicious and satisfying meal.

2.     Go to meal when you’re sick?

When I'm feeling under the weather, I usually opt for something comforting and easy on the stomach. A bowl of homemade chicken noodle soup is often my go-to meal. It's soothing, hydrating, and packed with nutrients to help boost my immune system and provide some much-needed nourishment

3.     Favourite drink to order?

I love Sparkling Water. I don´t drink alcohol when I play a gig. My classic choice is "Sparkling Water Mojito," made with fresh mint leaves, lime juice, a splash of simple syrup, and topped up with sparkling water.

4.     First Rave/Show as an attendee?

The first Love Parade in Berlin in 1989 was my first rave experience and will remain in my memory forever. It was a pioneering time for electronic music, a beginning that has led us to this day.

6.        Favourite comic book character?

The Joker is my favorite comic book character, and for good reason. His complex and unpredictable nature, coupled with his twisted sense of humor and relentless pursuit of chaos, make him one of the most captivating and iconic villains in the comic book world. From his maniacal laughter to his intricate schemes, The Joker embodies the essence of madness and embodies the dark side of human nature. I think I could portray him well.

7.        All-time favourite song?

"Who Wants to Live Forever" is my All-Time favourite song, a masterpiece by Queen that transcends time and emotion. The haunting melody, coupled with Freddie Mercury's soul-stirring vocals, creates an atmosphere of profound melancholy and introspection. The lyrics, exploring themes of love, mortality, and the longing for eternal life, resonate deeply with listeners, touching the very core of human existence. "

I love Greece and Mykonos, but also Florida and especially Miami. Mykonos, with its picturesque beaches, whitewashed buildings, and lively nightlife, is a paradise for relaxation and indulgence. The island's rich history and stunning landscapes make it a favorite destination for travelers seeking both tranquility and excitement.

On the other hand, Miami's vibrant atmosphere, colorful art deco architecture, and diverse culinary scene make it a dynamic and energetic city. From the iconic South Beach to the bustling nightlife of Wynwood, Miami offers a wealth of experiences for visitors to enjoy.

I love both a lot.

9.        What is your guilty pleasure?

Hahaa, you caught me. Singing along loudly to cheesy pop songs when no one's around.

ELEPHANTE INTERVIEW - ELECTRIC ESCAPE X CANADIAN RAVERS @ THE FORBIDDEN CITY

On Saturday, February 24th, 2024, I had the opportunity of interviewing Elephante when he made his stop here in downtown Toronto at the The Forbidden City for his Elephante North America Tour. With his love for music, Elephante followed his passion for music and pursued his career as a producer and artist, thus coming out with three albums and playing at many events such as Electric Daisy Carnival (EDC).

Elephante, also known as Tim Wu, is an American DJ, producer, and musician. He gained popularity with his remixes of popular songs and his original tracks in the electronic dance music (EDM) genre. Elephante's music is characterized by catchy melodies, energetic beats, and a blend of various electronic styles. He has released several successful singles and EPs, and his live performances are known for their high energy and crowd engagement. Overall, Elephante is recognized as a talented artist making waves in the EDM scene with his unique sound and captivating performances.

With a full moon in effect that night, we had support from Twlight, DeeCee and Zo for a bass heavy night at The Forbidden City. Right before Elephante went on, I had the opportunity of having a nice chat with Tim for an interview and boy did we have a lot to chat about. Haha. Here’s the interview and I hope y’all enjoy it!

THE INTERVIEW!

Can you tell us about yourself and where did you get the name Elephante?

E: I've been producing and DJing for over 10 years now and the name Elephante came from before I was making music full-time, I had a corporate job. I hated it and was making music on the side while leaving work early to do so. And so, the elephant in the room was that I wanted to quit my job and become an artist, so it was about quitting my job and embracing the elephant in the room and becoming the Elephante.

Are elephants your favorite animal?

E: They're actually not, it’s actually penguins. But I do like elephants.

For your latest song “Leave The Ground” with Amber Liu, how was that making the song with your friend?

E: It's amazing, Amber's a dear friend of mine, she's a homie. We met playing Valorant and we just started chatting and we're like hey, do you want to make some music together? I had this idea for a ballad that I wanted to do as a duet and she's amazing, so we got together in the studio and wrote out this song and it was really fun working with her. She's awesome and she's such a goofball. And yeah, I’m happy with how it turned out and I think it's one of the most like heart-wrenching songs that I've ever made.

Off the top of your head, what was your favourite memory of being a DJ or producer?

E: Man, there's been so many but probably my peak moment was playing mainstage EDC. That's one of those things where it's you're like oh shit, I actually made it. It’s great and the views crazy from up there and there’s people as far as you can see and it's very surreal, but it's like you know it's one of those experiences where like very few people get to do this so you just want to really soak it in. I blacked out the whole time I was I there. There was just so much adrenaline. I look back at photos and I'm like I did that? That's crazy!

For your set tonight, are we going to have some twinkle-twinkle little star dubstep?

E: That was kind of a meme that I was just messing around for fun, so probably no twinkle-twinkle dubstep tonight. But that was like a couple hour experiment in the studio just for fun and yeah, I like doing goofy shit like that from time to time.

Aside from DJing and music production, what do you like to do on your time off? I know that Valorant is one now.

E: My game of choice is actually Apex, but I like to play pickup basketball. I got a dog a couple years ago so I do a lot of hiking and walking, he’s a husky mix. I just picked up carpentry so I'm starting to build a studio in my garage while learning how to cut wood. It’s nice to get out of the house and do something that’s not related to music, just to get a little palette cleanser. I mean it’s fun, working with my hands is a fun thing.

Who are some producers or DJs you look up to? Even artists.

E: Growing up, my idol was John Mayer, I know he’s not a DJ but he was the artist that made me want to make music. And then once I fell in love with electronic music, it’d be Skrillex, Porter Robinson, and Avicii. Nowadays I love Rufus and Odesza. Just any kind of electronic music with some heart and melodic soul and some real emotion in it. Seven Lions of course. Strangers by Seven Lions is one of my favourite songs of all time.

Are there any producers or DJs you hope to collab with in the future?

E: Yeah, I just launched an artist collective and label. I have another song with Sabai coming out in a couple weeks. And we’re working with a bunch of really cool artists on the label, it's very much a homie crew. There are guys like Hoang and Yetep. It’s called Hidden Horizons and we’re launching it at Miami Music Week in a few weeks with our very first event. And we’re going to put out some music along with it. So, I’m really excited for it.

Are there any up-and-coming producers or DJs in your opinion who are making the waves in the scene right now?

E: I mean I just mentioned a bunch of them. Sabai’s killing it, I’m very excited especially for the next generation of Asian-American artists because coming up for me. I was the one of the few people doing it. But now, I feel that the generational waves are changing and there’s a lot of young talented Asian-American producers I think are super talented. There’s this girl Chyl who’s making really dope music right now, very excited, very cool and very fresh. She’s awesome.

Aside from Hidden Horizons, are there any projects that you might be working on that you can tell your followers about?

E: Hidden Horizons is the big one, we’re launching this label and collective. And I have a ton of music associated with it coming out, and that's the big move for me this year. You know, staying on tour, playing a bunch of shows and doing some more events along with that. Planning a lot of big stuff for that. But as for albums, you’ll have to stay tuned though, my vision is to put out a collective album, the label, I want it to be very collaborative and very community driven. My goal and my dream is to put together a big album with my friends. It’s totally more fun that way.

Are you going to have any new merch coming out soon?

E: Yeah, I have a new jersey drop coming very soon and we’re getting some Hidden Horizon merch made as well. It is coming very soon, I might be leaking but I haven’t announced this yet, but we do have a Dynasty Season jersey coming, it got some really cool designs.

I just wanted to say, so previously with my interview with Sabai. Before, I didn’t know that you actually sang most of your songs. So, I’m very impressed, you’re very musically talented considering you play the keys, the guitars and sing your own songs. Not a lot of DJs and producers do that themselves.

E: Yeah, I mean it’s fun and that’s how I started my career in music, by writing songs, singing and playing open mic. I have a little bit of a different background than a lot of other producers. It’s just one of those things where you’re always looking for ways to make your songs unique and when I look inside, it's like what really makes me me, that’s a big part of it.

I know that you’ve also worked with a lot of other artists as well, like Haliene is one of them. Are you slowly drifting towards more melodic bass or dubstep?

E: Yeah I'm always experimenting with new things you know, early on in my career, I didn't do a lot of collabs because I always was pretty stubborn and very specific in what I wanted and I felt like I wanted to prove something, that there's a vision that I wanted to present and now that I've been around for a while and put out a lot of music. I feel like I don't really have anything to prove anymore. It’s more like working with other artists that are doing cool stuff and just having fun with it.

Yeah cause you even have a new song with Beauz which was Right Before Our Eyes. We had them play here in Toronto not long ago as well.

E: Yeah, they're homies too and they're making some cool music as well, but that was a cool club banger bouncy house song that we did and it's just like you know making music with friends and trying on new sounds.

Aside from that, I’m going to say. I love your remix for Starbright by Dabin. That guitar solo near the end is too good.

E: Dabin’s a homie and he’s also an unbelievable guitarist, I remember being like I love this song but I wanted to hit it a little harder, so I think I might have hit him up and went like “Yo, can I remix this” so that was a really fun one to make and I was really stoked how that one came out.

Aside from having the Asian-American DJ producers coming out. I’m surprised there’s a lot of you guys that play the guitar too. There’s Dabin, Sabai, Hoang and you, that’s actually a good amount.

E: Hey man, we were all music nerds at one point, like playing piano, with our parents teaching us. So, you know, we got to come back around somehow.

Put it to good use! -laughs-

E: Yeah, exactly. -laughs-

LIGHTNING ROUND

Day or Night? Night, when I was younger, it was definitely night, but now that I have a dog, I have to be awake during the day. I got to get up early. So, I definitely trend towards the night but in reality, I’m more maybe a day person.

Piano or Guitar? I’m going to have to go with the guitar. I started with piano, but the guitar is where I fell in love with writing music. Yeah, the guitar is perfect instrument, you can get harmony, you can get chords, you can get leads, you can get rhythm. It’s just good stuff.

Coffee or Tea? Coffee, for sure, every day, every morning to start off the day.

House or Trance? House

Dubstep or Drum & Bass? Oooh, for most of my life dubstep, but right now, probably drum and bass. I'm into drum and bass right now.

Tech or Psytrance? Psytrance, psytrance is fun, I can’t do extended periods of it but when you get a little taste of psytrance, you get that energy.

Cold or Hot? Hot. I live in LA.

Dogs or Cats? Dogs, big dog guy.

Rare, Med-Rare or Well-Done for steaks? Oh, med-rare. I can’t respect anyone that has well-done steaks.

Following the lightning round, Tim and I got to chat around some more, I brought up the part about how my good friend was so sad Elephante couldn’t make it to Escapade Music Festival last year and for this booking we had here in Toronto, she couldn’t make it this time. Well, to anyone excited to see Elephante as much as my friend, Escapade was the first event Elephante ever missed. Tim said that it was such a bummer, he was at the airport and with the flight delays and the final arrival time, he was going to miss his connecting flight to Ottawa. There was just no way to get to Ottawa in time, which was tough, and he felt really bad. Which is why he came to play in Toronto.

Tim even messaged my friends that were excited to see him at Escapade to let them know he was coming to Toronto! So honestly, respects to you Tim because that’s how fans and I feel your passion and love towards music and your fans. To anyone else excited to see Elephante perform sometime, just know that he definitely wants to make it up to everyone. So hopefully we’ll have Elephante back in Toronto again soon, perhaps with the Hidden Horizons crew! Like Tim said, that would be a vibe!

As for his set after the interview. Man was that a good set! Tim went off starting his set with an intro version of “Dynasty” into “Closer” which is my most favourite song by Elephante. He even played and sang “Strangers” by Seven Lions too which we spoke about during the interview. As for songs from his three albums “I Am The Elephante”, “Glass Mansion” and “Heavy Glow”, he crushed it as the Elephante he is with mixing in his own edited versions of the songs while mixing in some dubstep, psytrance, a lot of live singing to even “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” by Green Day into a drum and bass drop. I really didn't see that coming. Omg. LOL.

Surely, we can’t forget songs like “Right Before Our Eyes” with Beauz to “Love Again” with Sabai to even his newest release “Say It Like You Mean It” with Sabai and Olivia Ray. As for the last song of the night. Elephante closed off with “Dynasty” which got the crowd jumping. Can I say, throughout my 14 years of raving. I’ve never seen a DJ sing so much in my life. So wow, that was truly a very special night. Thank you for that and the opportunity to conduct a very fun interview with you Tim!

I can’t wait till you come back to Toronto soon! Fingers crossed that you’re going to bring Hidden Horizons to us! 😊

Don’t forget to follow Elephante on his socials!

Thanks for reading!

THE INTERVIEW

CR: Hello Kenn, glad to have you on Canadianravers. How are you and where are you talking to us from?

KC: Hello from Valencia, Spain! It's great to be here on Canadianravers. I'm doing well, thank you. Hope you’re having a fantastic week as well?!

CR: Your "Chan Chan" track is generating significant popularity and positive feedback. What was the inspiration behind this particular song, and why do you think it resonates so strongly with your audience?

KC: Chan Chan was inspired by my love for Spanish/latin music and the culture. I recently just got back from a 3-month tour in Latin America. During that tour, I finished the production of Chan Chan. I was inspired a lot by their local music, classics and new ones. I also enjoy watching a lot of street musicians! I infused these experiences into the production of the track.

CR: Can you walk us through your creative process when producing a new track? Are there any rituals or specific routines you follow to get inspired?

KC: My creative process is pretty laid-back. I don't have any specific routines or rituals. Instead, I just go with the flow and let life inspire me. Whatever's happening around me – whether it's where I'm living, what I'm into at the moment, or any big life events – that's what I use to fuel my music. It's all about keeping it real and letting my experiences shine through in my tracks.

CR: Your collaborations with various vocalists have resulted in some incredible tracks. How do you approach establishing a connection and synergy with these vocalists to bring your shared vision to life?

KC: Collaborating with vocalists is all about building a strong connection and synergy. We get to know each other, share ideas, and find a shared vision for the track. It's a collaborative process where we bounce ideas off each other and bring our creativity together to make something truly special.

CR: Your music often conveys strong emotions and messages. What motivates you to infuse these elements into your work, and how do you hope it impacts your listeners?

KC: Whether it's joy, sadness, or reflection, I want listeners to feel something when they hear my tracks. For me that is the power of good music. Ultimately, I hope my music leaves a lasting impression so that when they experience certain emotions, they know they can turn to my music to find a perfect match for their mood.

CR: Your performances are known for creating an electrifying energy among the crowd. Can you share a memorable moment or interaction with a fan that has stayed with you throughout your career?

KC: Not sure if they're considered fans- but my family and friends watching my show for the first time is something that I will treasure forever. Their support means the world to me, and seeing them there filled me with joy. It reminded me of how far we've come together.
During the time and releases, seeing fans appearing to each of my shows, getting a tattoo of my logo or even the lyrics on their body, that’s another level. For me it confirms that my music is touched by people and that I’m helping them to smile or putting them in a certain mood/vibe.

CR: Each of your tracks seems to have a distinct vibe and atmosphere. How do you go about choosing the right sounds and elements to create a cohesive sonic experience for your listeners?

KC: I just go with the flow and let life inspire me. Whatever's happening around me – whether it's where I'm living, what I'm into at the moment, or any big life events – that's what I use to fuel my music. It's all about keeping it real and letting my experiences shine through in my tracks.

CR: Electronic music is constantly evolving. How do you see the genre's future unfolding, and what excites you most about its direction?

KC: It changed a lot and it’s a very very exiting change that happened the last few months/years towards electronic dance music. It’s impossible to predict the future but I do love the way that it’s currently heading to.

CR: Finally, any final words for our readers regarding any upcoming projects?

KC: I have lots of plans for 2024, and definitely more music is coming soon. Lots of collaborations too so I’m very excited. Stay tuned for more exciting updates and new music by following me on my socials!
