GIVING FAN A TASTE OF HIS FULL SONIC AND EMOTIVE RANGE,
DIM KELLY’S THIRD ALL DAY I DREAM EP DOES NOT DISAPPOINT
DIM KELLY returns to Lee Burridge’s All Day I Dream imprint to release his newest EP Pianologic. On the heels of two highly celebrated EPs released on the label - Nocturna Animal in 2021, and Mangrove in 2022, DIM KELLY is back once again, delivering a masterful body of work which graciously toes the line between more joyous, light compositions and darker melancholic soundscapes.
DIM KELLY has an expansive musical background, influenced by classical music, hip hop, and club music. In addition to his aforementioned releases on All Day I Dream, DIM has released electronic music under an impressive slew of labels, including Lee Burridge’s other imprint TRYBESof, Armada, and Reworck. As his taste and production focus have evolved over the last 25 years, DIM has meticulously developed an incredibly rich sonic palette, which is evident across the Pianologic EP.
The EP kicks off with its titular track, a standout from the body of work. ‘Pianologic’ greets us with a complex rhythmic pattern, the percussion rooted in the soul of house music. Before long, DIM’s classical influence is apparent, as elegant piano notes dance above the driving beat. Around the three minute mark, the complex drum pattern cuts out, and we are left with a long, exquisite piano solo over a simple four four beat. Adorned with stunning melodies, the piano solo serves as a moment of pure euphoria amidst the elaborate percussion present throughout the rest of the track.
The second track is a collaboration between DIM KELLY and Stereoclip, ‘Preach The World’. There is a captivating contrast found between the joy in ‘Pianologic’ and the darker emotions evoked from ‘Preach The World’. Still, the track is beautiful - its soft melodies blend perfectly with the sharper percussive elements, creating an atmosphere where shadow and light intertwine, like feeling melancholic towards the future.
The EP’s third offering flips back towards the lighter side of the emotional spectrum- ‘The Stream’, stands out as an introspective experience. DIM KELLY reveals the inspiration behind this composition, noting: "While producing this track, I felt the tropical warmth of the Louisiana night mangrove- even though I've never been there! It was in this context that I immersed myself during its creation, adding a deep and solemn voice that reminds us that music is a space to share love, grace, and joy. Despite the state of the world, I've maintained a natural form of optimism, haha."
The EP closes with ‘Nuit D'amour’, which is co-composed by longtime friend and collaborator Maya Safar. DIM and Maya have worked together for many years, and you can sense the musical synergy between the two. Maya’s magnificent voice and sumptuous songwriting adds an enchanting dimension to DIM KELLY’s production. ‘Nuit D'amour’ is the third track these two have released through All Day I Dream, and fans will be delighted to know that it surely won’t be the last- the duo have more forthcoming collaborations that are currently in the works. Once again, shadow and light harmoniously converge in this track, illuminating sometimes dark lyrics with music infused with positivity.
DIM KELLY is coming off a four show run on All Day I Dream’s 2023 world tour, playing the iconic All Day I Dream of Ibiza Magic party at Cova Santa three times, and most recently, All Day I Dream of Montreal Magic. Stay tuned for more shows to be announced for the chance to experience Pianologic played live.
