After spending the last five years showcasing new, exciting, and underrepresented music from underground artists via their legendary Hollywood residency and parties across the globe, Space Yacht launches its own record label today.
The LA-based culture collective has become a pivotal figure in the US electronic scene, specializing in spotting developing talent like CLB & Formula. The Space Yacht team initially connected with CLB via Twitter, championing his style of executing UK Bass and Drum & Bass elegantly as an American, against the typical expectation that the US is where sounds tend to get commercialized.
"Moving Forward" stemmed from Space Yacht’s Twitch program called Tune Reactor - essentially a reaction video crossed with a demo review show. Launched during quarantine, Tune Reactor has allowed Space Yacht’s founders to hear 1000+ demos over the last two months while sharing their A&R process on air, 3 days a week.
“When "Moving Forward" landed on our Tune Reactor show on Twitch, we were instantly blown away. Part of it was the hook that came from the track’s co-producer and lyricist, Formula. ‘No matter how hard you try, you try to stay alive. You keep on moving forward’ was spot on in terms of what we were feeling in 2020, yet timeless in that it describes something we all do every day, and have done since the beginning of time--survive. We knew right away we wanted to work with this piece of art somehow, so we decided to launch our label with it.
- Space Yacht co-founder Henry Lu
Space Yacht’s newly-minted imprint is a testament to the brand’s commitment to championing budding talent, as well as its ability to adapt amid the nightlife industry shutdown.
What sets Space Yacht’s record division apart is that while its releases will be available across standard retailers like Spotify and Beatport, exclusive cuts like extended mixes, stem packages, and acapellas will be available for download directly from Space Yacht’s website. Instead of trying to stop unaffiliated producers from making their own bootleg remixes, Space Yacht’s founders are choosing to lean into bootlegging as an integral part of clubbing culture, and providing stems to budding producers who want to put their own spin on a track. Similarly, this direct-to-consumer sales model gives the undiscovered artists the power to reach fans directly without relying on major distributors, as well as rewards dedicated followers who frequently check the website.
ABOUT SPACE YACHT
Space Yacht started as a small music industry party in the back alley of a Los Angeles speakeasy in 2015, and has since become a heatseeker for the next-up of dance music talent. Before COVID kneecapped the industry, the tastemaking brand had been running weekly residencies and events internationally, throwing 150 shows per year. Their approach to events took the world by storm with surprise performers, forward-thinking bookings, and spontaneous pizza deliveries at the peak of the party.
Running the gamut of dance flavors from house to dubstep to trap to techno and beyond, Space Yacht is a curatorial force that showcases rising superstars well before they hit the main stage, and the record label will be an extension of that dedication to spotlighting unique acts and sounds.
