Electric Escape is proud to present a living legend of the Toronto dance community. Whether you were an early adopter or a new recruit in Toronto’s electronic dance music scene, the name Mark Oliver is more than likely familiar to you via an unforgettable night at the infamous Spin Saturdays at the Guvernment Nightclub or in the summer opening up the main stage at VELD.

Be prepared for a set heavily-laden with “Guv Vibes” in the areas of house, techno and trance, played by the master himself, as he takes us on a 4 hour extended journey into sounds close to his heart. Electric Escape family, please join us as we give Mark Oliver the warmest welcome to our home and native land, on Friday July 6th.

Originally from Scotland, Mark Oliver is presently based in Toronto and his influence on the electronic music industry is a profound one. Coming from a strong musical background, Mark exploded onto the club scene as a DJ in 1987 with his first residency at Tazmanian Ballroom in Toronto. Within a short year, demand for his sound had spread to Miami where he played at Scratch (South Beach, Miami's very first night devoted to house).

Mark pioneered the rave movement in Canada by being the first DJ to play acid house and techno nights in 1988, as well as co-founding North America's first rave organisation, Exodus.

DJing seems to come naturally to Mark. He is frequently said to have the best ears in the business, as well as a keen ability to sniff out a hit well ahead of the pack. Combining remarkable technical ability with a sublime understanding of dynamics of the dancefloor, Mark is able to read and anticipate exactly what the crowd wants. Through his ability, dedication and perseverance, Mark has amassed a large and devoted following. Understanding the need to progress, he is constantly refining his technique, sounds and style, which keeps him in favour with the people he plays for.

In 1996, Mark began a mammoth weekly residency at The Guvernment. For years, he was the only DJ to play the main room and his nine-hour weekly sets became legendary. During his behemoth eighteen-and-a-half year residency at The Guvernment, Mark incredibly missed only ten nights (while touring Asia and Europe). He helped propel the club to it’s place as one of the top worldwide clubbing destinations in history.

In 2015, The Guvernment was forced to shut it’s doors forever, as the building was sold to condominium developers. The final night at the club was as magical as the ending of a classic fairytale. After being presented with a gold record and gold-plated turntables by Deadmau5, Mark played the last set ever at this illustrious club.

Throughout his storied career, Mark has played internationally from Hong Kong to Ibiza at clubs, festivals, boat parties and the occasional cave. As well as playing alongside virtually every top DJ in the world, his mastery of creating an enormous atmosphere has also been witnessed at a plethora of private parties he has played for celebrities such as The Rolling Stones, U2, Prince, Madonna and Lenny Kravitz.

Buzz is paramount for any DJ and to maintain such high levels of demand for more than two decades, is testament to Mark's incredibly high standards and also his taste in music.

While he has been going gangbusters for years as a DJ, when not behind the decks, Mark displays his musical talent and production prowess in the studio with both remixes and original material.
